Selangor is stepping up its fight against plastic waste. Starting next year 2026, the state government will enforce a ban on the use of plastic bags for three days a week—Friday through Sunday—across all business premises.

State Executive Councillor for Public Health and Environment, Jamaliah Jamaluddin, said the move is part of Selangor’s broader commitment to reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainable habits. The Selangor Legal Department is now finalizing the legal framework before the regulation is officially enforced.

Currently, shoppers in Selangor pay a 20 sen charge for each plastic bag on non-ban days. However, Jamaliah noted that the state is also reviewing the possibility of increasing the fee, making plastic bags even less appealing to consumers.

“This initiative is not just about regulation—it’s about building awareness and encouraging long-term behavioral change in reducing plastic dependency,” she explained.

The expansion of the ban builds on Selangor’s ongoing “No Plastic Bag” campaign, which was first introduced in 2017. Environmental advocates have welcomed the move, highlighting that weekend bans will have the greatest impact, as shopping activities are typically at their peak.

With this latest step, Selangor continues to lead the way in Malaysia’s push toward greener policies. Consumers, meanwhile, are encouraged to adopt reusable alternatives—such as cloth bags, baskets, or biodegradable options—to support the state’s environmental goals.
