Malaysia’s Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, has issued a stark warning: too many corporate and government-led “green” initiatives are little more than greenwashing—superficial efforts that lack genuine impact. In a recent interview and in his newly published book Saving the Planet, the Minister calls for authentic, transparent, and accountable climate action across all sectors.

Nik Nazmi argues that insincere sustainability practices not only erode public trust but also risk alienating Malaysia’s younger, purpose-driven workforce. He stresses that real change cannot be achieved through slogans and cosmetic efforts alone.

“Sustainability must be rooted in sincerity, local values, and cultural responsibility,” he emphasizes. “Economic development and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive—they must go hand in hand.”

Key Reforms on the Horizon

Malaysia is taking important legislative steps to back this vision, including:

  • The upcoming Climate Change Act, which will establish a legal framework for climate governance;

  • Stricter penalties for polluters, to improve enforcement and accountability;

  • A National Adaptation Plan, to help communities and businesses respond to the growing risks of climate-related disasters.

These measures aim to institutionalize sustainability, moving it from boardroom statements into binding, actionable commitments.
