Demand for recycled plastics has increased significantly as global supply chains face disruptions and the cost of virgin resin continues to rise. Oil-based feedstock volatility has pushed manufacturers to seek more cost-efficient alternatives, accelerating the shift toward recycled polymers.

Industry participants report that customers across regional markets, including Singapore, have sharply increased orders for recycled resin as availability of virgin materials becomes constrained. This demand surge has translated into higher production requirements for Malaysian recyclers, with some suppliers reporting multiple-fold increases in export volumes within short periods.

Recycling Operations Expanding but Dependent on Imports

Malaysia’s recycling sector is scaling up production capacity, with facilities processing post-consumer and industrial plastic waste into industrial-grade resins such as low-density polyethylene (LDPE). These materials are commonly used in packaging applications, agricultural films and industrial products.

However, the industry remains heavily dependent on imported waste, particularly from developed markets such as the European Union and Japan. Imported feedstock is often preferred due to its relatively higher consistency and lower contamination levels compared to domestic waste streams.
